The Calling

--I want to mention that I hesitate to post this next part on the web because it has profound personal spiritual ramifications on which I do not have a firm handle. Please consider the story above as the backdrop for the following story--

An elderly gentlemen, who had been reading the paper on the leather couch behind me while enjoying his 'morning cup' tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around to face him and put his hand in mine to shake it, and his other hand clasped me on my right shoulder and he held that position as he asked me a few questions.

He smiled with a twinkle in his eye and said, "Do you work for a government accounting agency?"

"No Sir," I replied.

"So, why else would a man your age have those numbers in his head? Do you keep them there simply so you may lament the rotten state of things in the world?"

"No, Sir."

"I know. You know you have a responsibility don't you? You're trying to fix the problems you see. You've been this way since you were born, haven't you?"

"Yes, Sir."

"There's a reason for it, son. You keep doing what you're doing, and one day you'll have a chance to fix them."

And that was it. That was two days ago. Since that handshake it's like I've been on fire. There was a certainty to his tone, an honest smile on his face, and twinkle in his eye like he knew something already. Like he knew that a great fire would well-up inside me once someone affirmed the calling I have always felt deep inside me.

I'll write more about processing this later, but for now, I'm trying to formulate exactly what my deep calling looks like in daily, practical application.

It's a calling that was instilled by God before I was born. A calling that others were born with too. I think I know a few of them already.

I'm anxious to get to work.
